R. Glenn Hubbard, former chairman of the US Council of Economic Advisers and dean of the Columbia Business School, presented his new book written with Tim Kane, Balance: The Economics of Great Powers from Ancient Rome to Modern America, on November 19, 2013, at the Peterson Institute. Hubbard discussed lessons from the history of powerful nations and civilizations breaking down under the weight of economic imbalances. Charles A. Kupchan, professor of international affairs at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and Steve Clemons, Washington editor-at-large of The Atlantic, joined the discussion.
Hubbard has been dean of Columbia Business School since July 2004 and a Columbia faculty member since 1988. From 2001 until 2003, he was chairman of the US Council of Economic Advisers and remains an influential advisor to many US political leaders on economic policy. Hubbard received his BA and BS degrees summa cum laude from the University of Central Florida and also holds AM and PhD degrees in economics from Harvard University.
