Event Summary

Ambassador of India to the United States Meera Shankar delivered her speech, "India's Role in the World Economy and the Future of US-India Relations," at PIIE on November 18, 2009. Her speech came just a few days in advance of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's state visit with President Obama.

Ambassador Shankar has held several important assignments during her career as an officer of the Indian Foreign Service. She served as Director in the Prime Minister's Office from 1985 to 1991 after which she was posted to Washington as Minister (Commerce) from 1991 to 1995. Thereafter she headed the Indian Council of Cultural Relations in New Delhi, overseeing India's cultural diplomacy. Her last assignment was as Ambassador to Germany from December 2005 to April 2009.
