Event Summary
According to US president Donald J. Trump, "tariff" is the most beautiful word in the dictionary. Since he entered office, he has imposed a vast number of tariffs globally. He first imposed a global tariff of 25 percent on steel, aluminum, autos and auto parts, and later “reciprocal” tariffs on virtually all countries in early April. A week later they were paused for 90 days, but a global across-the-board tariff of 10 percent remains in place. In the meantime, countries are trying to negotiate deals and find solutions.
Do we need to reimagine the global trading system? Can deals with nearly all other countries really be negotiated in such a short time? What is the actual aim of the Trump administration, and how should the European Union position itself? Retaliation, a deal, or derisking? And how will the China card play out for Europe and the United States?
