Event Summary

After the reciprocal tariffs announced by President Donald Trump on the so-called liberation day in April, only two deals have been made—with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, and a preliminary agreement with China. There are ongoing talks with several countries, but it seems to be difficult to conclude deals in an ever-changing tariff landscape.

The July 9 deadline for agreements has now been postponed to August 1, but at the same time new tariffs threats are emerging, lately on agriculture. As countries struggle to conclude deals with the Trump administration, they are also looking elsewhere to new allies and new trading partners. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has announced a rapprochement between the EU and the 12 countries in the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). What implications would such cooperation have for trade? And what are the long-term consequences of this new tariff world for the global trading system?
