What Lies Ahead for the Global Economy: A BRICS Perspective

Mohamed A. El-Erian, chief economic adviser at Allianz, will deliver the Peterson Institute's tenth Whitman Lecture, "What Lies Ahead for the Global Economy: A BRICS Perspective," on October 27, 2014.

Dr. El-Erian chairs President Obama's Global Development Council, is a columnist for Bloomberg View and a contributing editor at the Financial Times. He formerly served as chief executive and co-chief investment officer at PIMCO.  Dr. El-Erian first joined PIMCO in 1999 and was a senior member of PIMCO's portfolio management and investment strategy group. He rejoined the company at the end of 2007 after serving for two years as president and CEO of Harvard Management Company. Before coming to PIMCO, Dr. El-Erian was a managing director at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup in London and, before that, he spent 15 years at the International Monetary Fund. Dr. El-Erian holds a master's degree and doctorate in economics from Oxford University and received his undergraduate degree from Cambridge University. He is an Honorary Fellow of Queens' College, Cambridge University.

Our Whitman Lecture series was created in 2001 by Marina and Robert Whitman. Marina Whitman is now Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. She formerly served as Vice President and Group Executive for Public Affairs at General Motors, as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers and as Distinguished Public Service Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a member of the Institute's Board of Directors for many years. Robert Whitman is Professor Emeritus of English Literature at the University of Pittsburgh. The previous Whitman Lectures have been presented by global economic leaders including Joaquín Almunia, Ross Garnaut, Noboru Hatakeyama, Otmar Issing, Mario Monti, and Dambisa Moyo.
