China-Europe-US Economists Symposium: Reform - Challenges and Opportunities

Event Summary

In May 2014 the Peterson Institute sent a delegation of ten research staff to participate in the third annual China-US Economists Symposium, a conference jointly hosted by the Institute, the China Finance 40 Forum (CF40), and Bruegel. The conference was attended by a range of high-profile Chinese economists and policymakers drawn from the membership of the CF40. The two-day conference featured numerous substantive exchanges on issues ranging from financial risks to state-owned enterprise reform to China's changing role in the global economic system.

After the conference, the Institute delegation spent five days meeting with Chinese policymakers and academics in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. The official visits included bilateral dialogues with the People's Bank of China, the China Banking Regulatory Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Finance, the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and the Development Research Center of the State Council. The Institute held bilateral academic exchanges with the China Development Research Foundation, the University of International Business and Economics, the Beijing University School of National Development, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and the China-Europe International Business School.

Participants from the Institute included Adam S. Posen, Nicholas R. Lardy, Nicholas Borst, Caroline Freund, Arvind Subramanian, Ryan Rutkowski, Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Marcus Noland, Jeffrey J. Schott, and Nicolas Véron; Christian Broda of Duquesne Capital Management participated as a guest of the Institute.
