I was at an interesting conference on food security over the weekend at the Munk Center at the University of Toronto; Jeff Sachs gave an impassioned plea for action via video link. Jina Park, a committed UT student, alerted us to one of those lone legislators who take it upon themselves to keep the North Korean refugee issue in the public eye. Conservative MP Barry Devolin has sponsored a private member’s motion that is worth quoting in its entirety:
“That, in the opinion of the House, the government should: a. express its concern over the situation of the citizens of the DPRK who have fled China and who fear imprisonment, torture and potential execution if forcibly returned to their country and b. encourage the government of China to work with the international community, including Canada and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees to find a solution that respects China’s right to defend its borders and security while upholding the rights of DPRK citizens, as articulated by the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.”
Couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Jina and other members of the Korean community are working to assist the refugees who have landed in Canada; kudos all around.
