Fresh perspectives on North Korea and North-South relations are always welcome, so it was interesting to see a new journal on the scene: S/N Korean Humanities. The effort is led by Won Choi, a research professor at The Institute of the Humanities for Unification at Konkuk University; a piece by Park Myung-Kyu explains Konkuk’s efforts along these lines in more detail. The purpose is to approach the division and reunification of Korea through a humanities lens. The journal is online and freely accessible here.
The first issue contains three feature articles on the topic of "Unification Discourses in South Korea", including an analysis of the thinking of the controversial philosopher Song Do-yul. The issue also includes a review of a North Korean comedic film, Day at the Amusement Park and a piece on the Kumkangsan Kagukdan, a band created by North Koreans living in Japan.
