For those of you in Washington, DC tomorrow (Monday, March 7, 2011, 6:30pm) the Asia Society is sponsoring a showing of  director Kim Tae-gyoon’s film Crossing starring Cha In-Pyo. Loosely based on the story of a North Korean refugee, it depicts cinematically many of the themes that we have raised in our blog posts: the ongoing problem of chronic hunger, the spread of unauthorized media and cultural products from China, the abuse of the penal system, the dire straits of North Korean refugees in China, their arduous journeys to the South, and their difficulties in acculturation once there.  Mike Lee, author of Escaping North Korea, which documents his own activities assisting refugees in the border region will speak. The program will take place at 1526 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington, DC  20036; Metro access Dupont Circle red line, the north exit is modestly closer to the venue; tickets are $20 for Asia Society non-members. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP the Asia Society at [email protected].
