As we mentioned in earlier posts involving an ostrich farm and an apparently doctored photo, AP has reached an agreement to open a bureau in Pyongyang. Earlier this year Seoul bureau chief Jean Lee made a trip to North Korea accompanied by photographer David Guttenfelder. The Atlantic has now published 37 of his photos. As the Atlantic introduction indicates, “The pair made visits to familiar sites accompanied by government minders, and were also allowed to travel into the countryside accompanied by North Korean journalists instead of government officials. Though much of what the AP journalists saw was certainly orchestrated, their access was still remarkable.” As the mishaps alluded to above (and much of the reader commentary on the Atlantic site attests) AP will likely face an ongoing issue with appearing to be an outlet for regime propaganda.
