The visual display of information is a major area of innovation, and thanks to Curtis Melvin (of North Korea Economy Watch fame) we discovered a particularly interesting example of it: Lux Carta's Computamaps website. The firm produces products like population density maps of cities that can be used for a variety of commercial and policy purposes, from managing traffic and spectrum to zoning and real estate development. One of their projects: 3D maps of cities. They have done hundreds, but you guessed it: they have one of Pyongyang. There are two versions: one at the tab Images, the other at the tab Video, which provides a look at the center of the city as if doing a helicopter flyover. What is striking is the incredible development of high-rise apartment buildings. A time series of these maps would make for a great research project.
