Research Analyst

Position Overview

The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), a leading think tank in Washington, DC, seeks a full-time research analyst to support senior scholars across a range of economic policy research. Research analysts contribute to rigorous empirical work, influential publications, data development, and internal research discussions.

PIIE examines major economic challenges in the United States and globally. Our research informs public debate and policy discussions on topics including economic growth, labor markets, regulation, health policy, environmental issues, and fiscal and monetary policy.

Work Location

This role follows PIIE's hybrid work arrangement, combining onsite work at our Washington, DC office with remote work of up to two days per week, subject to approval and completion of required training.

Key Responsibilities

Quantitative Analysis, Programming, and Statistical Support (60%)

  • Work closely with senior scholars to prepare, revise, and document programming code, simulation files, databases, and regression estimates.
  • Analyze economic and policy data using statistical software, spreadsheets, and other research tools.
  • Prepare tables, charts, and other outputs from empirical analysis and model simulations.
  • Maintain, update, consolidate, and quality-check existing and newly assembled datasets.

Research Support (30%)

  • Draft concise summaries of research findings for use in working papers, policy briefs, blog posts, and other project publications.
  • Conduct literature reviews and synthesize academic, government, and other authoritative sources relevant to assigned projects.
  • Locate, collect, organize, and document research materials and data from electronic databases, libraries, government publications, and other reliable sources.
  • Maintain clear bibliographic records, source documentation, and research files.
  • Assist with special projects and other research-related duties as assigned.

Project Support, Communications, and Outreach (10%)

  • Coordinate with communications and marketing colleagues to prepare research for dissemination across web, social media, and other public-facing platforms.
  • Support designated scholar(s) with events, meetings, outreach, and related project logistics as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, mathematics, statistics, data science, public policy, international relations, or a related social science field with substantial economics coursework.
  • Research experience demonstrated through academic work, internships, or relevant professional experience.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency with computer and data management tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience coding for economic analysis in R or Stata. Finalists will complete a coding assessment administered by PIIE's Quality Control team.
  • Strong attention to detail, sound analytical judgment, and the ability to communicate research findings clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to use AI-enabled tools responsibly, when appropriate, to support research and analytical workflows. AI tools are supplemental and should not replace the research analyst's independent research, analysis, judgment, or original writing.
  • Any AI-assisted work must be independently reviewed, fact-checked, and validated against appropriate sources before use, consistent with PIIE policies and applicable confidentiality requirements.
  • Korean language ability is preferred but not required.

Compensation

Salary: $63,000–$66,000
