Chad P. Bown
Chad P. Bown joined the Peterson Institute for International Economics as a senior fellow in April 2016 and has been the Reginald Jones Senior Fellow since March 2018. His research in international trade policy, industrial policy, economic security, supply chains, and trade agreements has been published widely. Bown is the host of Trade Talks, a podcast about the economics of international trade and policy that he co-created with Soumaya Keynes in 2017 and which they cohosted through 2021. In 2026, Keynes and Bown published their book How to Win a Trade War (Simon & Schuster, Pan Macmillan), which has been translated into German, Spanish, and Korean.
Bown has performed public service in two administrations, as chief economist at the US Department of State in the Biden-Harris administration and as senior economist in the White House on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. He has also been on the research staff at the World Bank and the World Trade Organization, and he was on the faculty for 12 years at Brandeis University, where he was a tenured professor of economics. Bown is currently a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Bown received a BA magna cum laude in economics and international relations from Bucknell University and a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
