Event Summary
The Peterson Institute will hold a conference on Japanese economic policy, focused on the progress of Abenomics in making structural reforms, on March 26, 2015. The conference is part of the multiyear project, the High-Level Working Group on Japan-US Common Economic Challenges, supported by the Institute, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
Panel I will address the adaptation of Japan's corporate workforce and competitiveness, including Womenomics initiatives. Panelists will include Michael Chui, partner at the McKinsey Global Institute, and Lindsay Oldenski, Peterson Institute for International Economics and Georgetown University.
Panel II will focus on corporate governance reform. Panelists will include Alicia Ogawa, senior advisor at the Columbia Business School's Center on Japanese Economy and Business, Kalpana Kochhar, currently the International Monetary Fund's Deputy Director in the Asia and Pacific Department, and Tasuku Kuwabara, partner at the McKinsey Global Institute's Tokyo office and lead author of McKinsey's new report "The Future of Japan: Reigniting Productivity and Growth."
Heizo Takenaka, the leading independent economic adviser to Prime Minister Abe, will deliver the keynote speech. Takenaka is also the director of Keio University's Global Security Research Institute, and, the minister responsible for economic reform in the government of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Panel III will discuss the Japanese impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and trade liberalization. Panelists will include Dennis Blair, chairman of Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, previously the US director of National Intelligence and commander-in-chief of the US Pacific Command; and Jeffrey J. Schott, senior fellow at the Institute who leads the Institute's work on TPP.
