
Modeling a US-EU trade war: Tariffs won't improve US global trade balance
President Donald J. Trump threatened recently to impose 25 percent tariffs on all imported EU products. This could narrow the US merchandise trade deficit with EU countries but would have little effect on America’s global US trade gap. And the measures would cause higher inflation and lower real GDP than otherwise for the US and nearly all the 27 EU member countries, according to Warwick J. McKibbin and Marcus Noland.
