Meeting

Discussion with George David, Chairman and CEO of United Technologies Corporation

Peterson Institute, Washington, DC

November 8, 2006

Summary

The Institute hosted a meeting November 8, 2006 in honor of George David, Chairman and CEO of United Technologies Corporation and Vice Chairman of the Institute's Board of Directors. Based on the unique perspective of UTC, with its wide variety of industrial businesses (Otis Elevator, Carrier, Sikorsky, Pratt and Whitney, etc.), he described the simultaneous and mutually reinforcing globalization and domestic expansion of the firm, its unique employee scholar program that provides company-financed education for its workers, and its innovative environmental policies. The company has a fascinating story of linking very successful productivity and job growth with effective adjustment assistance for its workers that could provide a model for American business as a whole.

George David has been CEO of UTC since 1994 after previously serving as President of Otis Elevator for eight years. Before joining Otis in 1975, he worked for the Boston Consulting Group. Mr. David is a director of Citigroup and member of the Business Council and Business Roundtable. He has recently been extensively profiled in cover stories by BusinessWeek (October 25, 2004) and Barron’s (March 27, 2006). He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute since 1996 and became its initial Vice Chairman earlier this year.
