“We begin bombing in five minutes” contest winner and new “UN swings into action” contest

We would like to congratulate Julia Lee of Los Angeles, California, winner of our “the bombing begins in five minutes contest.”  Julia came within 24 hours of correctly guessing the moment of North Korea’s third nuclear test. (Sorry, but to those of you who submitted your guesses after the test—some rules are binding even if implicit.) Steph will be happy to know that it was a grad student in political science who took the prize. For her prognostication, Julia wins an autographed copy of Witness to Transformation (and possibly a recruitment call from the intelligence community). Congratulations, Julia!

But, wait, there’s more!  Now that we have had a test, we can expect that the United Nations Security Council will respond.  So we’re launching a “UN swings into action” contest.  Guess the date and form—Presidential statement or resolution—of the UN response. Last time it took them a month.  This time around I expect we won’t need to wait a month to announce a contest winner!

And given the nature of the contest, this time the prize will be an autographed copy of Haggard and Noland’s renowned monograph, Engaging North Korea: The Role of Economic Statecraft!

So, put on your thinking caps, pull out your crystal balls, and predict the date of the UN action.  Ties will be broken on the basis of correctly guessing the form of the action. One entry per person, please.

Resolution, but I don’t think the Chinese will let it pass while the South Koreans are chairing it. March 6th.

My very fallible crystal ball tells me it’ll be a resolution, however weak, and it’ll be adopted on February 25.

Now let’s do a pool on the next one. I just can’t choose between 2/16 and 2/24.
